Coil Blogs

Overview#

On May 26, 2021, we announced that we're sunsetting Coil Blogs to devote more resources to our next big project, Rafiki.

We've teamed up with our friends at Write.as to allow you to migrate your content to their blogging platform. As a thank you, you'll receive one year of Write.as Pro for free!

You can continue to use Coil Blogs until you migrate your content. When you migrate, all of your published blog posts, draft (unpublished) blog posts, and links to web monetized sites will be imported to Write.as. You can still sign in to Coil Blogs and delete or unpublish your posts.

Coil Blogs will become read-only after July 31, 2021. If you haven't migrated your content, you can still do so until November 30, 2021.

FAQ#

Migration FAQ#

What will happen to my posts on Coil Blogs if I don’t migrate?#

After November 30, 2021, your blog posts will become view-only and you won’t be able to migrate to Write.as. Your posts will remain on Coil until we completely remove the blogging platform from our site.

What if I want to move my posts on Coil Blogs to another platform?#

Coil doesn’t provide a way to export your posts, so you’ll need to migrate to Write.as first. After you’ve migrated, you can export your data to CSV, TXT, and JSON by going to https://write.as/me/export.

Will links to my Coil Blogs posts break?#

After you migrate to Write.as, links to your Coil Blogs posts will redirect to your posts on Write.as. For example, if you link to hhtps://coil.com/p/username/Blog-Post/aB_123c, the URL redirects to https://write.as/username/blog-post.

What will my username be on Write.as after I migrate?#

If your Coil username is available on Write.as, you’ll keep your username. Write.as will generate a new username if it’s already in use. If you don’t like your new username you can go into your Write.as account settings and change it. See How do I change my username for my Write.as blog?

Why are some of the links I published on Coil Blogs in the draft post area of Write.as?#

The most likely reason is that the site you linked to is missing the og:image metadata property. This property, set by the site owner, defines which image appears when the site's URL is shared (like when you share a URL in a Facebook post). Rather than not migrate links to sites missing the og:image property, we put the links in the draft post area so that you can edit or delete the link/post yourself.

Write.as FAQ#

How much does Write.as cost?#

As an existing Coil blogger, you get one year of Write.as Pro for free. After a year, you’ll have the option to continue using Pro for a monthly or annual fee, or convert to their Core (free) plan. You can learn more about Write.as pricing and features on https://write.as/pricing.

How do I use Write.as?#

Everything on Write.as is based around plain text. Formatting text, adding images, and even embedding videos is done via plain text using a language called Markdown. Write.as offers a number of help articles, but we suggest starting with these:

You can also read more about Markdown here: https://www.markdownguide.org/basic-syntax/

How do I add photos to my Write.as posts?#

Check out the instructions on https://howto.write.as/adding-photos. This article explains how to add photos using Markdown.

Write.as also has their own photo hosting platform called Snap.as. Photo hosting with Snap.as is included with your Write.as Pro account. Read more about Snap.as on https://snap.as/.

How do I add exclusive content to my Write.as posts?#

You can make all or a portion of your blog post exclusive to Coil Members by using the <!--paid--> shortcode.

Insert the shortcode where you want the exclusive content to begin. Include it at the beginning to make the entire post exclusive, somewhere in the middle, or at the end, just before a bonus piece of content.

This content is available to everyone.
<!--paid-->
This content is only available to Coil Members.

As the creator, you’ll see this in your post.

Content with the message Your Subscriber Content Begins Here

Visitors without a Coil Membership will see this:

Exclusive content hidden by Coil messaging and Get Started button

How will my readers know when a post contains exclusive content?#

Posts that contain exclusive content will have a dollar sign icon next to the title on your blog’s homepage.

Example icon next to post title

Where can I find my payment pointer on Write.as?#

We automatically add your payment pointer to your Write.as settings as part of the migration process. You can find it by selecting Menu > Customize, then scrolling down to the Web Monetization section.

Payment pointer field on Customize screen

How do I change my username for my Write.as blog?#

Just like with Coil Blogs, your username is part of your Write.as blog address. If you change your username, your Write.as blog URL will change as well. To change your username:

  1. Go to your account settings at https://write.as/me/settings.
  2. Enter your new username.
  3. Click Update.

If you’re a new Write.as user, your blog’s title was set to your initial username during migration. Changing your username does not change your blog’s title. To change the title:

  1. Go to your Blogs page at https://write.as/me/c/.
  2. Click Customize.
  3. Change the Site Title.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save changes.

If I'm also a Coil Member, do I get paid when I read my own blog on Write.as?#

Yes. Because your blog is no longer on Coil, the Coil Extension can't tell when you're viewing your own content. All it knows is that you're visiting a web monetized site.

When you view any web monetized content, including your own, you'll stream payments at a rate of $0.36 an hour until you've streamed a total of $4.50 for the month. Then, the payout rate will taper to a lower amount until your membership renews.

I still have questions. Where can I find help?#

Check out the Write.as help docs and usage guides.

If you can’t find what you need, send an email to [email protected]. Other ways to contact them are listed on their Contact page: https://write.as/contact.
