Customize the WordPress Plugin
This page describes customizations you can make to the WordPress plugin beyond adding Web Monetization to pages, posts, and taxonomies.
#
Promotion barBy default, a message appears at the bottom of Enabled & Public pages/posts when a visitor isn't web monetized. The message asks the visitor to consider signing up for Coil and includes a Learn More button.

You can change the message or disable the message entirely. To disable the message:
- Open the Coil plugin settings.
- Select the Apperance tab.
- Uncheck the Show Coil Promotion Bar... option.
- Click Save Changes.
#
ExcerptsThe settings under the Coil plugin's Excerpts tab let you display excerpts of content to non-Coil members on Exclusive pages and posts.
- Select the post type(s) you want to display excerpts on.
- Edit your Exclusive page/post.
- Expand the Excerpts section and enter your text.
- Publish your changes.
⚠️ Your particular theme and setup of WordPress dictate whether excerpts are supported and, if they are, where they appear (under the title, in the body, in search results, etc.).
This example shows an excerpt on the homepage of a WordPress site using the Twenty Sixteen theme. The excerpt appears as the post's summary and content.

If you choose to show excerpts and none appear, the functionality might not be supported by your theme or setup.
#
Learn More buttonThe Learn More button is shown to non-Coil Members when they view Enabled & Exclusive and Enabled & Public pages/posts. You can change the button's label and URL.
- Open the Coil plugin settings.
- Select the Messages tab.
- Scroll down and locate the Learn more button text section.
- Enter the new text that you want to appear on the button.
- Review the next section for the Learn more button link.
- Enter the new URL that you want the button to link to.
- Click Save Changes.
#
Messaging settingsYou can edit many of the messages your visitors will see from within the Coil plugin's Messages tab.
Each message contains a description that explains why a visitor will see the message. The text box contains the default message shown to the visitor. Simply click within a text box and enter your own message. Click Save Changes when you're finished.
You can revert back to the default messaging by deleting your custom content. When you delete your content, the default messages reappear automatically. Click Save Changes when you're done.

PadlockA padlock is shown next to page and post titles when the page/post is set to Enabled & Exclusive. To disable the padlock:
- Open the Coil plugin settings.
- Select the Appearance tab.
- Uncheck the Show padlock... option.
- Click Save Changes.
info
If you choose to show the padlock and it doesn't appear on your pages/posts, your theme might not support the feature.
