Personal and third-party websites

You can monetize your personal website, and certain other third-party websites, to receive payments from visiting Coil Members.

Monetizing a site requires you to have basic web developer skills and access to the <head> section in the site's code so that you can add the monetization meta tag. Some third-party sites, like Wix, allow you to add custom meta tags to your site without direct access to the <head> section.

If you have your own personal website, the site must be secure (served over HTTPS).

You don't need a free Coil creator account to monetize your website unless you want to post a link to your website on Coil's Blogs page.

Follow the steps below to monetize your site. See the documentation on webmonetization.org for more information about the open technology behind Web Monetization.

Monetize your personal site

For you to receive payments from Coil Members, they must use the Coil Extension.

If you have a Coil creator account

  1. Log in to your Coil account.

  2. Click your profile icon and select Settings.

  3. Select Monetize content.

  4. Under Monetize your website, copy the meta tag to your clipboard. We automatically generate this tag after you set up a payment pointer in your Coil account. Your tag should look similar to this: < meta name="monetization" content="$your.payment.pointer.address/xxx">

  5. Place the tag into your site's <head> section. The tag must be present on every page you want to monetize.

If you don't have a Coil creator account

  1. If you haven't already, set up an account with a supported digital wallet and get your payment pointer.

  2. Go to the Meta Tag Generator on webmonetization.org and insert your payment pointer.

  3. Click Generate and copy the entire <meta> tag.

  4. Place the tag into your site's <header> section. The tag must be present on every page you want to monetize.

Example HTML

<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<title>My Web Monetized Site</title>
<meta
name="monetization"
content="$wallet.example.com/alice">
</head>
</html>

Monetize a third-party site

For you to receive payments from Coil Members, they must use the Coil Extension.

The steps for obtaining your monetization meta tag are the same here as they are for having a personal site. Whether you can add the meta tag to the site's <head> is up to the third-party provider. In general, if you have access to add a meta tag to a site or page, then the site/page can be monetized.

Wix, for example, lets you add custom meta tags to your site. After Step 5 in their instructions, take your meta tag from https://coil.com/settings/monetize or made through https://webmonetization.org/meta-tag and paste it in as the new Custom Meta Tag.

Another example is Vimeo. Vimeo doesn't let you monetize your profile or video pages through their site. This means any URL that begins with https://vimeo.com can't be monetized. However, if you embed a Vimeo video within your personal site, that can be monetized because you'll monetize your personal site, not the video itself. You could even embed the video into a Coil blog post. Coil blog posts are automatically monetized.

Post to Coil's Blogs page

You must have a free creator account to post a link to Coil's Blogs page. The link must point to a page that's already monetized. You'll receive an error if we can't find the <meta> tag or if the tag is malformed.

  1. Log in to your Coil account.

  2. Click + New Post.

  3. Select Link.

  4. Provide a title for your post and enter the URL of a monetized page.

  5. Click Post.

Blogs page thumbnails

We'll generate a thumbnail image to display with your link on the Blogs page. We check your page for the Open Graph protocol og:image meta tag and use the defined image as the thumbnail. For example:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://coil.com/404cat.png>

If you don't have an og:image tag defined, we use a generic thumbnail image:

You can learn more about the Open Graph protocol on their website.

FAQs

Do I need a membership to earn money with Coil?

You'll need a Coil account but you don't need a membership. A membership is only needed if you want to browse members-only content.

Do I have to pay Coil to monetize my website?

No. Monetizing your website is free. By setting up a Coil account with a payment pointer, you'll receive micropayments when Coil Members visit your site.

Is Web Monetization possible if there's no <meta> tag on my site?

No. The <meta> tag is required for Web Monetization to work. Without it, Coil doesn’t know where to send your payments.

Does my third-party service support Web Monetization?

In general, if you have access to add a custom meta tag to a site or page , then it supports Web Monetization.

For example, Wix allows you to add custom meta tags to your site. If your site is hosted through Squarespace, you can add the meta tag using their Code Injection feature; however, the feature is only available in their business and commerce plans.

Each third-party provider is different, so you'll need to check out their help docs.

How do I know if my content is property monetized?

You can verify your personal website is monetized by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to a monetized page on your website. If Web Monetization is enabled, the extension's Coil logo will darken and look like one of the following icons:

  2. Click the icon.

If the content is monetized, the bottom of the window will have a $ in a green box and show "This page is Web-Monetized".

If it's not monetized, or monetized incorrectly, the bottom of the window will have a $ in a gray box and show "This page is not Web-Monetized."
